Things I Amplify from the web

My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm ……

Are you using Amplify yet? If not, I suggest you take a closer look at this site and what it can do for your business. Click here to check out Amplify. This awesome resource was shared by my good friend Jamie Pelaez.

Amplify is a great resource and tool for anyone looking to harness the power of #socialmedia. The functionality of it is one of the best I've seen. You see, #Amplify, like #Ping.fm, allows you to integrate a number of your #socialnetworks in one place so you can broadcast out a message or helpful information to your #followers or #connections all at once.

This is especially helpful when you have multiple social accounts open because it's a pain to individually post to each one. Ping.fm offers a similar service, with the ability to select whether your post will just update your statuses, a micro blog, or full blown blog post.

So why choose @AmplifyTheWeb over @pingfm? I'm glad you asked :-) . I say don't choose. Use both! Here's how I am doing it and why:

First set up a ping.fm account. Set up all your social networks and link them there, minus twitter and facebook for sure, possibly a few others depending on how you want to funnel your followers. Now set up your Amplify account. Now here's the really neat part: amplify allows you to integrate ping.fm as one of your social services.

This is great because currently Amplify doesn't offer to link to as many different #socialplatforms as ping.fm does. So you can benefit from both services, allowing you to post once and have your thought heard across a large number of networks. Maybe in the future Amplify will offer all of the same networks as ping.fm, eliminating the need to have both, but for now they have a great working relationship; where one lacks the other makes up for it.

Speaking of, you may be wondering still why not just go with ping.fm since it has the potential to post to a larger range of networks? Well Amplify has a couple of very neat advantages that ping doesn't.

For starters remember I told you to leave your #twitter and #facebook off of ping.fm? You'll want to set these up directly with Amplify. One of the reasons for this is because Amplify is in and of itself, another social platform. So this is yet another opportunity for you to funnel your followers into networking with you on another platform while simultaneously broadcasting to all your networks. When you update, your friends will see "posted via Amplify.com" and may choose to click on that and join you there too. If you post to twitter and facebook just using ping, it will show as "posted via ping.fm" but people cannot connect with you on ping.

Yes, Amplify allows you to connect with other users, comment and recommend posts you like, and even totally customize your own Amplify page. And so far from my experiences, Amplify users LOVE using the service and are a unique breed of users. The Amplify community is made up of a wide variety of users who all enjoy getting social....and actually have information-rich content to add. I think this tends to be the case more so here versus sites like Twitter because users are not limited to the number of characters they can use when broadcasting a message.

For the simple fact that Amplify not only is a #socialplatform in itself, allows the integration of a ping.fm account for maximum visibility across all your networks, AND your posts are not limited in length, this is why I've chosen this to be my central hub for all of my social activity.

Touching back on why having the ability to make longer posts is important, this goes back to the second reason why I chose to leave twitter out of my ping.fm account. By the way, Amplify does allow you to link up multiple twitter accounts. Amplify allows you to post your blurb to twitter....and if it is longer than 140 characters (the maximum character count for any twitter post), it automatically appends your post at say, 120 characters, and inserts this at the end:
(Cont) your bit.ly link here......
See here for an example- www.twitter.com/katievega .

Your followers can just click to read the rest of your full blown thought instead of trying to get creative with your abbreviations to make it fit or tweeting 3 times to fit it all in. Again, now your followers have the opportunity to get social with you on yet another platform. In my opinion, twitter is good for reaching a wider audience of people but Amplify has a special ambience that may be more conducive to building long term business relationships/friendships without all the noise.

In case I forgot to mention it, did I mention that Amplify allows you to integrate your bit.ly account? This is so great because you no longer have to manually shorten those links before posting, it's all done for you!

One more cool thing is that you can get your own Amplify email address, and email your posts to that address. This is really convenient for getting around any technical issues the site may be having and still post your update, and also to post from your mobile device. Even if you don't have a data plan or there is no signal where you are at, you are able to save your thoughts as drafts in your email account and send when you are able to pick up signal. And how cool is this- when you email your Amplify address with a picture attached you just took with your phone, it will post with your update!

The only thing that could be cooler than this would be if Amplify would allow you to confirm your mobile device attached to your account, and have the ability to text your updates!

If you are on more than 2 social networks I highly recommend you get set up on Amplify and ping.fm to help you manage your updates. I think we have only seen the beginning of it's abilities and I think there will be many updates and new features in the future.

Now if only I could hook up my Amplify account to SocialOomph? Maybe that's too much to ask. Or maybe not? What do you think @dgrossman & @egoldstein ?
;-)

Happy Social Networking!

  1. Eric Goldstein  RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm …… http://bit.ly/90DSeT - thank you for such a great review Katie. So glad that you’re enjoying Amplify!

By the way, you should be able to choose which Facebook Pages you want to autopost to for any amplify post. To set up Pages, go to Settings >> Autopost and then choose Facebook on the left. You’ll then see the option to enable Pages. Once you do that, there will be separate check boxes for each of your FB pages in the Autopost options on each post. Let me know if that’s not working for you as it should.

    1. Kurt Geer  RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm …… http://bit.ly/90DSeT Great post. Question for you. Does ping keep from target urls from 6 mths? My experience is the target url is gone and goes straight to ping

      1. Katie Vega  @kurtgeer I don’t know if it is that way anymore because I only ever see a 30 day history available. This does sound vaguely familiar though about any ping links on older posts out on my networks being totally invalid and just re-directing them to ping’s homepage. Since I have been using bitly though this doesn’t happen.

      2. Katie Vega  @egoldstein. You’re welcome, and thanks for the RT. Actually it isn’t presenting that option for me, but I am currently on my G1 Android phone. Could be an issue with the phone’s browser.

        1. Katie Vega  @egoldstein any comments or thoughts on what the future holds for Amplify? Any of my suggestions seem like possibilities?

          1. Eric Goldstein  @Katie_Vega Dig the idea about posting by text for sure. I’m not familiar with SocialOomph so can’t speak to that one yet. As for the issue of Facebook Pages, I assume it must be an issue without the browser, but haven’t had a chance to check that yet.

            1. Katie Vega  @egoldstein Amongst other things, it can be set up to auto post to your ping.fm account up to a year in advance I think. So for instance I can set up messages or quotes to be broadcasted out multiple times a day for up to a whole year so that my networks are receiving a consistent feed of information/updates from me. This is really useful to help with time management of your social networks. It also allows you to set up criteria on what twitter followers that newly follow you, are to be followed back. #socialoomph is a great tool !

              1. Eric Goldstein  @Katie_Vega sounds interesting/powerful. FYI… we’ll be introducing the ability to schedule posts on amplify in September.

                  1. Alexander Bihary  @egoldstein Looking forward to this one :)

                    1. Katie Vega  @alexbihary we all were.. .and now that they’ve partnered with Social Oomph,

Amplify is that much more powerful. Again, thanks to Eric & Dave for being listening and being so innovative, you guys rock!

                      1. Alexander Bihary  @Katie_Vega We can schedule posts within Amplify? Did that get added yet?

                        1. Katie Vega  @alexbihary Yep, but not something Amplify developed and implemented here…. so you won’t see it here. They were smart and partnered with SocialOomph, a great feature rich platform that allows you to pre-schedule your tweets up to a year in advance (i think?). It’s pretty awesome! So if you are a subscriber with #SocialOomph (free) you can upgrade to their professional level (paid) and get more goodies, including the ability to pre-schedule a TON of content and have it broadcast to Amplify automatically (which then hits all your other networks). Major time saver if you are into Social Media Marketing! check it out>>> http://www.SocialOomph.com

                          1. Kathy Jacobs  @Katie_Vega I didn’t know that #Amplify had partnered with #SocialOomph! Now, if I could just afford a paid membership over there. Love my free membership! Thanks for the tip!

                            1. Katie Vega  @callkathy Hello Kathy! Yep, I believe it was just announced yesterday? It’s pretty great huh?! As @JamiePelaez suggested, if you have a business partner you may be able to both use the same professional account since it has multiple account functionality. Hope that helps :-)

            2. David C.  RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm http://bit.ly/90DSeT Very nice review of #Amplify.

            3. Dave Grossman  Thanks Katie…much appreciated!!! :) RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm …… http://bit.ly/90DSeT

            4. Kryptos James  Its 2010, you can be everywhere… why limit yourself to one or two social sites… with Amplify you can be omnipresent.

              1. Alex Schleber  RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm http://bit.ly/90DSeT

                1. Katie Vega  @sloanb and another thing for @dgrossman and @egoldstein (saw your post on the top android apps):

I think we need an Amplify android app ;-P. I noticed that not only is the option to select which fan pages to update not working from my android, but also you can’t edit a post. For starters when I receive the email notification that my update has sucessfully posted, it says to “click here” to edit my post. That doesn’t come through hyperlinked so you can’t edit that way. I did go directly to the site to edit the post but unfortunately it won’t let me put the cursor in the text field to cut or paste what I need to. Androids also do this on other sites, just depends. (And the edit button is really hard to locate btw, that should be more visible in more spots). There may be other bugs that I haven’t discovered yet, but definitely a good idea!

                  1. Sloan Bowman  @Katie_Vega I agree the amplify platform is a prime candidate for a mobile app or a more optimized web application. I already find myself spending more time here than my usual services.

                  2. Katie Vega  Ok last time I swear! If I think of anymore #Amplify suggestions I’m going to start having visions in my sleep lol.

I thought I’d mention to you guys that btw, it’s not very easy to ‘get social’ or fan Amplify across the web because the company profiles aren’t anywhere to be found on the site. IMHO, you may consider adding a box on the home page about where everyone can find Amplify across the web.

Ok stepping down from soap box now ;-P

                    1. Eric Goldstein  About Amplify mobile, this week we’ll be making some final tweaks to the Amplify Newsfeed (ex: today we added the thumbnails for images and videos and tomorrow we’ll be changing the way comments are displayed). Once these changes are implemented, we plan to immediately optimize the mobile version of amplify.com. Once that is behind us, we will hopefully offer an app soon thereafter. @Katie_Vega @sloanb @UniqueSense

                      1. Sloan Bowman  @egoldstein I’m sure I am speaking for all of us when I say we look forward to the update. We appreciate all your hard work. Job well done.

                      2. Frank Woodman Jr  RT @katievega My review of Amplify vs. Ping.fm …… http://bit.ly/90DSeT > great read & good advice

                        1. Katie Vega  @kstaxman Thanks for the RT Frank!

                          1. Frank Woodman Jr  @Katie_Vega my pleasure Katie good posts need to be shared

                        2. Frank Woodman Jr  @katievega Re: http://bit.ly/90DSeT A very very good article Katie! Sorry I missed the day it came out but I RTed it anyway. You have laid out a very good and yet simple way to tie together all your postings and keep things coming out in an orderly stream. One of the problems with many posting methods is that they send everything to all your sites at the same time. That’s not a good method as spreading them out helps make them more visible and different times make more since for different sites. Anyway between HootSuite (or another Twitter app.), Amplify, and Ping a person can handle lots of media and control postings without spending to much time beyond the set up. Thanks so much and I’ll be watching and waiting for future tips.

                          1. Katie Vega  @kstaxman Thank you for your kind compliments Frank :-) and I’m so glad you see a benefit in it for yourself as well. Quick question; I also have HootSuite but don’t use it; are you familiar with #SocialOomph? Amplify just partnered with them last week- it has a ton of stuff in the ‘free’ version, but having the ability to pre schedule your content and have it post out to Amplify is genius!

                            1. Frank Woodman Jr  @Katie_Vega Well Katie I’m just the opposite in that I started using Amplify just recently and haven’t tried SocialOomph yet. I’ve fount Amp to be a good tool and HootSuite is a definite must for me on Twitter. It’s multiple feeds make it possible to watch and see more of Twitter as well as making it easy to follow posts, mail, and comments. Plus Hoot also allows posting to other social media sites like FaceBook and such and I had used it until I found Amp for that purpose. I’ve since been moving to Amp as I figure it out.

But I do intent to also check out SociaOomph (just what I need another site… LOL) as it may be a better tool yet for some things. And the fact that they are partnering with Amp only makes it more likely that they will become better at working together as time goes on.

Surprisingly I find as I add tools and sites like Hoot and Amp that actually I spend more time posting and less time managing. Good sites and tools just make the management end so much easier you have more time to do what you really came to a site to do, post.

Anyway I’m sure that with your advice on how to set things up I’ll soon be doing even better with everything. And I’ll let keep you posted on SocialOomph and how it goes for me. I’m looking forward to what new things you will help me discover in the future.
